The success of the Urban Agenda will depend on our ability to reflect local experiences, the demands of the population and the new challenges that comprise the concretion of the sustainable development goals (SDG) in a global environment.
This scenario raises the need to adapt regional and local public policies, and strengthen the role of local and regional Governments as agents of development. The agenda of regional Governments and its role on the international scene is of great importance for UCLG. For this reason, UCLG seeks to articulate its regional members through the Forum of Regions.
Territorial development in intermediary cities promotes the inclusion of topics such as local development (in its economic, social and environmental aspects), the decent work and territorial strategic planning, particularly in the urban-rural context. The SDG #8 aims at promoting inclusive and sustainable economic growth, employment and decent work for all.
To take a step forward on the Learning Agenda, the Forum of Regions together with the working group of intermediary cities of UCLG, the Santa Fe region and the International Labour Organization (ILO) cooperate in a forum for South-South and Triangular Cooperation on policies for inclusive development in intermediary cities and regional governments between 31 March - 1st April 2016.
The Santa Fe region stands out for its innovation in developing policies jointly with municipal governments and its population. These policies respond to specific needs such as land use in both urban and agricultural lands, the reduction of child labour within the rural population, the promotion of employment over the creation of added value through the implementation, among others, of innovation policies.
The event will allow the exchange of knowledge and good practices among the Santa Fe region and other regions and intermediary cities in Latin America, nurturing an agenda of thematic regional policies that promote the practical incorporation of successful experiences. The event will also serve to strengthen the voice of intermediary cities facing the global agenda of urban development to be defined in the United Nations HABITAT III Conference in October 2016.
