From the 25th to 27th of February a high level international meeting was held in Seville (Spain) to discuss the localization of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This meeting, planned by the governments of Spain, Ecuador and Cape Verde in collaboration with the United Nations  Local Initiative 2030 as well as with the participation of the Global Taskforce (GTF) of Local and Regional Governments was attended by the UN Assistant Secretary-General and proved to be an important milestone ahead of the high-level political forums to be held in New York in July and September. On February 12th and 14th, during UCLG’s 2019 Retreat, UCLG’s regional sections and committees, local and regional governments, and members of the Global taskforce participated in two workshops to enhance collective impact of monitoring and reporting on the localization of SDGs from the perspective of local and regional governments. The Retreat was the opportunity to collectively reflect upon the progress made, take stock of ongoing experiments, share lessons learned and lay the groundwork towards the HLPF Summit and the UCLG World Congress. The UCLG Culture Summit: the world's most important gathering on cities, culture and sustainable development
Since its founding Congress in Paris (2004) and especially after the approval at the Congress in Mexico City (2010) of the declaration "Culture, the fourth pillar of sustainable development", UCLG has always placed culture at the centre of its political agenda. Following the success of the first two UCLG Culture Summits (Bilbao, 2015; and Jeju, 2017), and taking into account the growing importance of culture in the framework of sustainable cities, UCLG's Executive Bureau decided to convene a third UCLG Culture Summit in 2019. The UCLG-Ubuntu Advisory Board kicked off in the framework of the UCLG Retreat
UBUNTU, UCLG Retreat - 19/02/2019
The Executive Bureau in Strasbourg agreed to set up an Advisory System for UCLG that should support UCLG facing global issues, and help the international development system understand the institutional implications of achieving genuine localization as well as help shift the role of local governments within this system. Under the name “UBUNTU”, the South African notion that sees the community as the building blocks of humanity, the Advisory Board came to life, with the aim of playing a role as intermediaries for the Presidency. Said advisory board would further provide pointed advice in various fields, as well as informal and formal support on the various dimensions of the international development agenda, and helping define the organization going into the future. The Group can also help ensure that regional specificities and nuances become integrated into the global work of the World Organization. (+)

UCLG Congress - 15/02/2019
The Fifth UCLG Retreat and Campus helped lay the groundwork for the UCLG Congress and Summit, which will take place in Durban in November 2019. During the course of the Retreat, the themes and the structure of the Congress were touched upon by the participants and the Presidency of the World Organization. (+)
