Eurasian cities in a struggle for heritage preservation

The capital of Bali, Denpasar city, has become a main platform for the discussion of climate change affecting the state of ancient cultural and architectural monuments. Local leaders, international experts and academia from 10 countries gathered at IX International Conference of Eurasia World Heritage Cities to discuss what measures need to be taken to preserve the heritage in a rapidly changing climate. UCLG visits the Diversity and Integration department of the City of Cologne

Following on the invitation by the City of Cologne, a delegation from UCLG visited the Diversity and Integration Department of Cologne to explore its initiatives in the field of migration. Having overcome the peak of the refugees’ crisis that started in 2015, the city has enforced a shift on its local strategy towards social inclusion through the creation of a coordinating body that ensures the functioning and coherence among former programs and activities addressed to vulnerable groups. 2019 Urban 20 Mayors Summit to take place in Tokyo on 21-22 May

Governor Koike of Tokyo will be hosting the second Urban 20 Summit on 21-22 May 2019. After a successful first U20 Summit in Buenos Aires, U20 cities continue to engage with G20 and call on their national governments to work together to address the most pressing challenges our world is facing. The Summit will be two-days event that will address issues like climate action, circular economy, social inclusion, sustainable economic growth, and gender equality, as well as their linkages with the 2030 Agenda. During the Summit, U20 Mayors will hand a Communique with their joint policy positions to the G20 Chair. (+)
First UN-Habitat Assembly

From 27th to 31st May UN Habitat will celebrate its first Universal Assembly in Nairobi. The theme of the Assembly, that will attract over 2,000 international delegates, is “Better Quality of Life in Cities and Communities” and will focus on the implementation of the New Urban Agenda to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Financing for development: give cities the power to act
The Fourth Forum on Financing for Development, convened by the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), was held in New York at the United Nations Headquarters from 15 to 18 April 2019. The objective of this annual meeting of the international community was to take stock of the progress and challenges of the Addis Ababa Action Agenda on Financing for Development and to produce recommendations to accelerate the financing of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the implementation of the 2030 Agenda on sustainable development. In Siem Reap, regional workshop to enhance local governments’ capacity of in Localising the Sustainable Development Goals’
On April 8 and 9, local governments and their national associations from 7 countries attended the workshop to Enhance their Capacity in Localising the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This was co-organized by UCLG, jointly with United Cities and Local Governments Asia-Pacific (UCLG ASPAC), LOGIN Asia, Development Partners Network on Decentralisation and Local Governance (DeLoG), Asian Development Bank (ADB) and hosted by the National League of Local Councils of Cambodia.
