Overview
More than half of the world’s population are now living in urban areas — increasingly in highly-dense cities. Urbanisation across many low-to-middle income countries has increased rapidly over the last 50 years. At present, 80% of the world’s largest cities are vulnerable to a variety of hazards, with flooding, earthquakes and windstorms being the biggest threats. Sea-level rise is threatening millions of people living in coastal cities less than 5 meters above sea level. And in addition to all this, Covid-19 is posing additional challenges for many urban residents (such as slum dwellers and informal workers).
This webinar aims at exploring how CSOs and local governments work together to strengthen the resilience of the communities they serve, outlining areas where collaboration happens at its best. We will look at how these local actors can join forces to champion a localisation movement, and what are some key recommendations for CSOs to collaborate effectively with local governments.
Objectives
- To raise awareness about unplanned urbanisation as risk driver, with a focus on Covid-19 and cascading effects in urban areas
- To share best practices of government-CSO collaboration for resilience building in urban settings, in the context of Covid-19 and other disasters
- To outline recommendations on how LGUs and CSOs can jointly champion a localisation movement
