2nd Summit of World Regions for Food Security

The Organization of Regions United FOGAR (ORU – FOGAR) and its Core food security group, presided by the Basse-Normandy Region, co-organized the 2nd Summit of World Regions for Food Security, with the Municipality of Medellin and the Antioquia Province in Colombia. The Summit took place in Medellin (Colombia) from 22 to 23 October 2012. Around 1200 participants took part in this event.

This event is a continuation of the 1st Summit of World Regions for Food Security that took place from 18 to 19 January 2010 in Dakar (Senegal) and represents an opportunity to pursue the dialogue between local, national authorities and international organizations on food security. It aims to find shared innovative and effective solutions to the problems of food insecurity and demonstrate the extra value contributed by Regions in this field.

More specifically, three overall thematic guidelines were under debate:

- systems of governance,

- land ownership (title of property, eviction of peasants,…)

- the food chain, from food inputs to waste management.

Climate risks mean that it is now more important than ever to mobilize all actors in this field.

The General Assembly of FOGAR also elected a new President, Paul Carrasco, President of the Province of Azuay (Ecuador) and President of the Organisation of LatinAmerican Intermediate Governments.
