The City of Rabat awarded world heritage site status

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) has included Rabat in its World Heritage list during a meeting held in Saint Petersburg (Russia), a decision passed unanimously by the UNESCO Committee. One of the rare capital cities to be included in the list of world heritage, the City of Rabat is considered "modern capital and historic city: a shared heritage".

In the Declaration of "exceptional universal value" relative to this site, the World Committee highlighted that Rabat demonstrates a visible heritage shared between several great cultures in human history: Islamic, Hispano-North African and European. The city stands out as a junction between traditional and modern architecture. The International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) also underlines that Rabat satisfies the necessary requirements of "integrity" and "authenticity", thus justifying its status as having "exceptional universal value".

The city of Rabat will host the 4th UCLG World Congress from 1st to 4th October 2013
