Ebrard announced president of the Global Network of Safer Cities

The Mexico City Mayor, Marcelo Ebrard, has been elected President of the Global Network of Safer Cities (GNSC) following its formal launch this Monday. The launch marked the sixth edition of the World Urban Forum that took place in Naples, Italy.

The appointing body of the United Nations on Human Settlement (UN-Habitat) recognised the ongoing achievements made by the City of Mexico in the last few years in safety, justice, crime prevention and reducing urban violence.

The Global Network of Safer Cities was created with the objective of supporting and accompanying local governments in the definition and implementation of better strategies to prevent crime and urban violence.

The work programme of the network for the coming years foresees the difficult task of developing the United Nation’s Guidelines on City Safety; the design of the new UN Index on Safer cities and the creation of a World Forum for Safer Cities.

Marcelo Ebrard acknowledged that the challenges in urban security do not only relate to questions of policy but also in creating communities, social systems and inclusive co-habilitation in our cities.
