Fatimetou Abdel Malick: the first female president of a regional council in Mauritania’s history

The regional elections that took place in Nouakchott in Mauritania on 16 September saw the victory of Ms Fatimetou Abdel Malick, former Mayor of Tevragh Zeïna, as the new head of the Regional Council of Nouakchott.

This is the first time a woman has been elected president of a regional council in Mauritania’s history.

The Regional Council of Nouakchott represents the most populated region of Mauritania, with 1.1 million inhabitants, accounting for a third of the total population of the country.ys.
