Ibero-American Mayors will debate economic development policies

Over 200 mayors and representatives from Latin America, Andorra, Spain and Portugal will come together on 18th and 19th October in Madrid to mark the 7th Ibero-American Forum of Local Authorities. The key theme for this Forum will be “Local Policies of Business Promotion and Job Creation”.

The event is co-organized by the City of Madrid, the Federación Española de Municipios y Provincias (FEMP), the United Nations Human Settlements Programme UN-Habitat, the Federación Latinoamericana de Ciudades Municipios y Asociaciones (FLACMA), United Cities and Local Government (UCLG), the Unión de Ciudades Capitales de Iberoamérica (UCCI), the Diputación de Barcelona and the General Secreatriat of Ibero-American Integration (SEGIB), with the support of the Spanish Minstery of Foreign Affairs and the European Commission.

The Mayor of Madrid, Ana Botella, will inaugurate the Forum along with the Mayor of San José (Costa Rica) and Co-president of United Cities and Local Governments, Johnny Araya, the President of FEMP and Mayor of Santander, Iñigo de la Serna, and Enrique Iglesias, Secretary General of Iberoamericano (UCCI). Participants will include mayors from the majority of Ibero-American capital cities as well as presidents and representatives of local authorities from these regions. 

In addition to local policies supporting economic development, participants will analyse the new economic challenges faced by local authorities and ways to achieve better collaborate between central and local level governments. Conclusions of the Forum will be presented by the SEGIB at the Cumbre Iberoamericana de Jefes de Estado y de Gobierno (Ibero-American Summit of Heads of State and Government), scheduled to meet in Cadiz next November. 

In parallel with the Forum and at the invitation of the Minister of Finance and Public Administration, Cristobol Montoro, a delegation of Ministers and Mayors will also meet to define the agenda for collaboration marking the preparatory processes of the summits.  

The VII Forum will therefore be preceded by the III Reunión Iberoamericana de Asociaciones Nacionales de Municipios (III Ibero-American Meeting of National Associations and Municipalities) organized by FEMP
