Eurasia Local Governments focuses on the Localization of the SDGs

Eurasia Local Governments Congress took place in the City of Cheboksary and brought together local and regional leaders of the Eurasian region to raise awareness of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) among local authorities and to involve and assist them in the implementation of the SDGs.

The event was a platform where to strengthen links with the Eurasian members and for local and regional leaders to exchange their experience and best practices on the SDGs implementation.

Parks Tau, President of UCLG participated in the Opening Ceremony and reinforced the commitment of the organization to the localization of the global agendas and highlighted the that peer-to-peer learning is a determining axis of the implementation puzzle.

On the second day of meetings a learning seminar on “Localizing the Sustainable Development Goals” was organized by UCLG Learning. Officials of associations of local governments of the Eurasian region attended the seminar and exchanged experiences and good practices on the implementation of the SDGs.

A renewed Eurasian Presidency 

Ilstur Metsin, Mayor of Kazan was reelected President of the Eurasia Regional Section. In addition, the new Vice-Presidents were elected. Thus, Alena Gubanova, Mayor of Astrakhan, Sunduin Batbold, Mayor of Ulaanbaatar, and Aisen Nikolaev, Head of the Sakha (Yakutia) Republic, became the Vice-Presidents of UCLG-Eurasia. 

During the Assembly, the participants summed up the work done over the past 3 years. The most important events during the reporting period included the V UCLG World Congress, which was held in Bogota in October 2016, the UCLG Executive Bureau meeting in Kazan in 2016, and the VIII International Conference of Eurasia World Heritage Cities on the theme “Children, Heritage, Tourism”, which took place in April last year in Safranbolu. Active work was carried out in the direction of strengthening cooperation with other sections of the UCLG: Asia-Pacific, Latin American, Middle Eastern, and African.
