Supporting Decentralisation in Developping Countries: latest updates

Over the past four months, UCLG's project "Supporting Decentralisation in Developping Countries" has carried out important advances in its support to building dialogue between local authorities and regional institutions of integration in Africa, Latin America, and Southeast Asia.

In May of this year, the regional conference in support of decentralization and local governance in the countries of ASEAN was held in Southeast Asia (Phnom Penh, 3-4 May 2012). In East Africa, the project co-organized with the Commonwealth Local Government Forum (CLGF), the inaugural meeting of the East African local government Forum (EALGF) in Arusha, Tanzania, on 24 and 25 September. And this October 18-19, the 7th Ibero-American Forum of Local Government will be held in Madrid, co-organized with the city of Madrid and the Spanish Federation of Towns and Provinces (FEMP), as well as with other partners (SEGIB, UN Habitat, MAE) to advance the institutionalization of dialogue between local authorities and States within the Ibero-American integration system.

We are also pleased to announce that the European Commission has extended the length of the project “Support to decentralization in developing countries” for an additional seven months, until June 2013. This will allow us to continue the process of dialogues with elected representatives and local officials in each of the project regions.
