The world body of United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG) on Friday, 18 August 2017, sent messages of support and solidarity to Barcelona in Spain, and its people, following the recent terror attacks in the city.
“Members of the organisation stand strong with Barcelona Mayor Ada Colau, who is also the UCLG co-President, and party to our commitment as local government to a collaborative local coherence agenda on peace, safety and security in our cities,” said UCLG President Parks Tau.
“We send prayers of comfort and peace to the people of Barcelona – those who were injured and the families of those who lost their lives in the attacks,” President Tau added.
He further pointed out that the local government sector is of the view that solidarity, stronger local democracy and a culture of peace is the only way to overcome terror.
“As we continue to share these values around the world, on behalf of the UCLG team, particularly those based in our headquarters in Barcelona, we wish to express gratitude for the many messages of support received through letters to our organisation and media following the tragic attacks.
“Your thoughts inspire us to continue our joint quest for a fair, inclusive and peaceful world,” the President said.
