World Forum of Regions: regional authorities invited to contribute to the international agenda

The first World Forum of Regions will take place in Dakar (Senegal) on 4th December, organized jointly by United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG) and Regions United- FOGAR (ORU-FOGAR). This event will bring together regional authorities from all four corners of the globe and gather Presidents of regions, local elected representatives and their partners. This event is therefore a unique occasion to exchange between elected representatives and to define a joint roadmap to increase influence in the coming international agenda, in particular in the preparation of Habitat III and in the negotiation process of the Post 2015 Millennium Development Goals and the future Sustainable Development Goals.

Organized on the occasion of the UCLG World Council at the Africities Summit, the World Forum of Regions is taking place at the invitation of two Presidents of organizations: Kadir Topbas, President of UCLG, and Paul Carrasco, President of ORU-FOGAR. Aliou Niang, President of the Association of Regions of Senegal and Joan Clos, Executive Director of UN-Habitat will also open the Forum.

The World Forum of Regions in Dakar will be an important step in the alignment process currently underway between ORU-FOGAR and the UCLG network. This alliance is an essential stage toward increasing influence in the international development agenda. During the Forum, two round table discussions will focus on the state of regional realities in the world and the proposals of regional authorities for a global partnership for development. They will define the global framework on aid effectiveness for development, the definition of MDG and SDG and the post Rio+20 perspectives. Numerous regional leaders have confirmed their participation, in particular from France, Morocco, Senegal and African regions.
