The 18th IOPD Conference in Barcelona claims cities as the main spaces for democratic innovation
On 25, 26 and 27 November, the International Observatory of Participatory Democracy held its 18th Conference in Barcelona, which was attended by more than 600 people from all over the world. During these three days, reflections and experiences related to direct democracy, citizens' initiatives and inclusive democracy ecosystems were discussed. The local governments and civil society represented called for ensuring that the mechanisms of participatory democracy do not leave anyone behind: only in this way will it be possible to restore the relationship of trust between local governments and citizens and renew the social contract. The IOPD Assembly adopted the Observatory's Local Democracy Agenda and agreed to strengthen links with the municipal movement that UCLG represents. (+)
In Vienna, European cities call on the EU to ensure powers and resources for social housing

On 4-5 December, the City of Vienna hosted the “Housing for All” Conference, a forum to present a European Action Plan to implement concrete policies for the right to housing. The gathering also kicked-off a campaign by European cities to put housing high on the agenda of the upcoming European election. Vienna, Barcelona and Lisbon, as promoters of the initiative within the Cities for Housing global movement, saw the support of the UN Special Rapporteur on the Right to Housing, Leilani Farha. The Conference also offered the chance to participants to have a first-hand impression of the Vienna model of social housing as a public service.  (+)
9th December was declared by the United Nations General Assembly as International Anti-Corruption Day to raise awareness of the negative effects of corruption, prevent it and fight it. Local and regional governments from all over the world  reaffirm the Hangzhou Commitment endorsed during the 2017 UCLG World Council and renew their commitment to work towards more transparent, accountable and participative cities and territories. To render this Commitment concrete UCLG launched the UCLG Community of Practice on Transparency and Open Government. (+)
#Webinar: Best practices of Local Government Associations in the implementation and reporting of the SDGs
United Cities and Local Governments and the UCLG Capacity and Institution Building (CIB) Working Group promote a series of webinars in December 2018, addressed to the National Associations of Local Governments, and their reviews on the progress of localizing the SDGs. (+)
A new Peer Learning Note about the Amazon region is now online!
UCLG in collaboration with the Latin American Federation of Cities, Municipalities and Associations of Local Governments (FLACMA), the International Labour Organization (ILO) and the Association of Municipalities of Bolivia (AMB), organized last April a peer learning event on the sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems to highlight the main urban challenges and opportunities in Amazonian cities. A glimpse into the interesting experiences, challenges and opportunities that were shared and discussed during the peer learning event in Riberalta is now online with this publication about “Amazonian Cities. Peer Learning about the sustainable use of territorial ecosystems”. (+)
Venice 2030, a multi-stakeholder dialogue to improve localizing financing of the SDGs
