The Community of Practice on #CitiesforHousing meets in Madrid to define a joint strategy

Signatories of the Declaration of Cities for Adequate Housing met in Madrid last 7 November to discuss the way forward in their joint quest for the right to housing. Barcelona, Mexico City, Montevideo, Plaine Commune, Seoul, Strasbourg, Taipei, and Terrassa took part in the first meeting of the Community of Practice on Housing. Participants agreed to work on monitoring tools and indicators to measure the realization of the human right to housing at the local level. This will allow to effectively advocate for further competences and resources for local governments to tackle the housing crisis. (+)
Cities of peace, democratic cities for all: Our priorities for the following years
The 2018 UCLG World Council held in Madrid, in the framework of the World Forum on Urban Violence and Education for Coexistence and Peace, witnessed vibrating political debates among the World Organization that helped shape our priorities for the years to come. Local democracy and decentralization, and our Strategies on Local Finance and Gender Equality are pillars for our work, and key to empower local governments and their communities. (+)
The UCLG World Council in Madrid places local  governments at the heart of building peaceful and resilient societies .
The UCLG World Council, held in Madrid, in the framework of the World Forum on Urban Violence and Education for Coexistence and Peace, gathered over 400 local government officials from more than 35 different countries, at the invitation of Mayor Manuela Carmena.  The day also saw the Business Sessions of both the UCLG Executive Bureau and the World Council.  Parks Tau, President of UCLG, chaired the Business Session of the UCLG Executive Bureau along with Co-Presidents Mauricio Rodas, Mayor of Quito, and Ada Colau, Mayor of Barcelona. The Business Session of the UCLG World Council was chaired by Roland Ries, Mayor of Strasbourg and Co-President of UCLG, and UCLG Treasurer Berry Vrbanovic. President of UCLG Parks Tau analyzed the work of the World Organization during the year, highlighting the work of the Work Areas of the World Organization in regards to international advocacy and monitoring of the Global Agendas, as well as the work of UCLG as a Learning Network.The role of local governments in peacebuilding and managing migration, local finance and gender equality s were some of the issues that took the stage during this event. UCLG and the Smart City Expo World Congress have been collaborating on several editions. For the 2018 edition, UCLG, as supporting institution, is organizing a series of sessions in order to promote the leading role of cities towards sustainable development. The sessions will focus the importance of integrated approaches that contribute to the creation of more liveable urban environments, through a process of localization of the Global Agendas at local level.
