Commitment, solidarity and democracy with the “International Seminar of the Forum of the Local authorities of Peripheries” in São Leopoldo and Porto Alegre

From November 23rd to November 25th the seminar was held of the “Forum of the Local authorities of Periphery” organized by the FALP and the commission on peripheral cities of CGLU. This network counts on the participation of 250 local authorities of periphery of differents continents. This meeting was built with the Legislative Parliament of the State of Rio Grande do Sul and the municipality of São Leopoldo, and joined together 47 international local entities of periphery. (+)

The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development is the global agenda on sustainable development. It includes 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and 169 specific targets. This is a global agenda, the aims and themes of which should be taken into account in all world regions, countries and cities. (+)

Following recommendation by the Policy Council on Resilience, UCLG members gathered in Hangzhou at the World Council, welcomed the initiative presented by Ronan Dantec to celebrate the One Planet Summit on the occasion of the second anniversary of the Paris Agreement, and to highlight the need to enhance commitments from all actors, as well to pay particular attention to the financing of initiatives to fight Climate Change. The UCLG World Council was held from 6 to 9 December in Hangzhou, China, at the invitation of Mayor of Hangzhou, XU Liyi. The UCLG World Council saw the inaugural sessions of the four newly created UCLG Policy Councils on Multilevel Governance, Resilience, the Right to the City, and Opportunities for All, which aim to increase political commitment on the major challenges faced by local governments around the world. The 2017 UCLG World Council gathered over 400 local officials and practitioners from 6 to 9 December 2017 in Hangzhou, China, at the kind invitation of Mayor Xu Liyi. (+)
On 9 December on the occasion of the International Anti-Corruption Day the UCLG World Council that took place in Hangzhou from 6-9 December 2017 endorsed the Hangzhou Statement to recall the vital role played by transparency, accountability and citizen engagement for efficient city management. International Anti-Corruption Day aims to raise awareness of the negative effect of corruption and the vital need to fight and prevent it. (+)
