As a useful contribution to the growing debate on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), last November the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) released From the MDGs to Sustainable Development for All, a report on the transition from the implementation of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) to the SDGs. The Committee on Digital and Knowledge-based Cities carried out an international study about the situation of ICT, innovation and knowledge in cities. Following this work, the Committee would like to perform a new study on the current situation and the opportunities provided by ITC, support for innovation, and progress in knowledge for the development of cities and their transformation into “smart cities”: the Smart Cities Study 2017. During the last five years working at United Cities, I have enjoyed extraordinary moments of serendicity. After our Congress in Bogota and our World Assembly of Local and Regional Governments in Quito I had one of those moments when I realized that United Cities (UCLG) had become one of the most powerful, most inspiring, most influential and effective global networks, and that it can really make a difference to the wellbeing of citizens. Learning is increasingly important for our members, in particular given the challenges and opportunities of implementing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The demands and priorities for capacity building, exposure and transfer of practices are very diverse and UCLG is seen as an important reference in these areas.  (+)

Following the earthquake that hit the province of Aceh in Indonesia, and in particular the Bireun and Pidie regencies, on 7 December, the General Secretariat of UCLG-ASPAC has launched a call for solidarity with the local population and contributions from the broad UCLG family to help with recovery efforts.
